Where it came from
Puella Magi Tart Magica serves as a spin-off to the widely recognized Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise, expanding the series' dark fantasy universe into historical settings. This third volume continues the narrative chronicling the life of Tart, a magical girl reimagined as the historical figure Joan of Arc during the Hundred Years' War. It was developed to explore the darker, more tragic implications of the magical girl contract within the context of 15th-century France.
The series is credited to the Magica Magica Quartet, the creative collective behind the original anime, with art and storytelling duties handled by Kawaz Tanemura and Masugitsune. The design language maintains the franchise's signature juxtaposition of ethereal, shoujo-inspired character aesthetics against grim, high-stakes existential conflict. Upon its release by Yen Press in English, the volume was received as a faithful stylistic expansion that successfully integrated historical fantasy elements into the established franchise lore.
