Where it came from
Resident Evil: Death Island is a 2023 computer-animated horror film produced by TMS Entertainment and Quebico, serving as the fourth installment in the Resident Evil animated film series. The project was conceived to unite several iconic protagonists from the video game franchise—including Leon S. Kennedy, Chris Redfield, and Jill Valentine—within a single narrative set between the events of Resident Evil 6 and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The film was developed to expand the series' lore beyond the gaming medium, maintaining the atmospheric survival horror tone established by Capcom's long-running interactive franchise.
The film's visual identity was guided by director Eiichiro Hasumi, who focused on integrating high-fidelity motion capture technology to mirror the aesthetic of modern entries in the game series. The narrative explores themes of viral outbreaks and corporate conspiracy, leaning heavily into the action-horror tropes that defined the series' evolution in the 2010s. Upon release, the film was received as a canonical continuation, appreciated by the community for finally bringing together lead characters who had remained separated in the games for many years.
