Where it came from
Resident Evil: Phantom Beast of the North Sea, known in Japan as Biohazard: Marhawa Desire, was serialized in the magazine Weekly Shonen Champion beginning in 2012. Conceived as a canon narrative bridge between Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6, the manga was written under the supervision of Capcom and illustrated by Naoki Serizawa. The story centers on an outbreak at a prestigious boarding school, serving to introduce the character Merah Biji and expand upon the global reach of the C-Virus.
Naoki Serizawa’s artistic direction focused on translating the claustrophobic horror and biological grotesquerie of the video game franchise into a static, sequential format. His approach emphasized high-tension action sequences and faithful creature design, aiming to satisfy existing fans of the series while establishing a grounded mystery. The work was generally well-received by the Resident Evil community for its direct tie-in to the main timeline and its efforts to flesh out the lore surrounding the bioterrorism prevalent in the later games.
