Roland Cashel was originally published in 1849 as a serialized novel in the Dublin University Magazine, later appearing in volume form with illustrations by Phiz (Hablot Knight Browne). Charles Lever, a prolific Irish novelist of the mid-nineteenth century, crafted this work during a period of his career when he was experimenting with more complex, interconnected plot structures than his earlier picaresque military tales. The narrative follows the life of a protagonist who traverses various social strata across Europe and South America, reflecting the mid-Victorian fascination with adventure, inheritance, and social mobility.

Hablot Knight Browne, widely known as Phiz, was Lever’s most frequent collaborator and was instrumental in defining the visual language of the author's work. His illustrations for Roland Cashel were intended to emphasize the dramatic and sometimes farcical tonal shifts of the text, utilizing his characteristic etched style to heighten the emotional stakes of the characters. While the novel did not achieve the same enduring cultural ubiquity as Lever's 'Charles O'Malley', it remains a notable example of the collaboration between the nineteenth-century serial novelist and his primary illustrator, showcasing the collaborative publishing environment of the era.
