The Novels of Charles Lever: Charles O'Malley, the Irish dragoon; with illus. by Phiz

Charles O'Malley, the Irish Dragoon was originally published in serial form starting in 1840, capitalizing on the immense popularity of military-themed picaresque novels during the early Victorian period. Written by Charles Lever, an Irish physician turned novelist, the work draws heavily upon his own experiences and observations of Irish life, blending high-spirited adventure with a semi-autobiographical tone that resonated deeply with contemporary readers seeking escapism and national identity.

The distinctive visual identity of the volume is attributed to Hablot Knight Browne, famously known by his pseudonym 'Phiz.' Having established his reputation as the primary illustrator for Charles Dickens, Browne brought a dynamic, caricatured style to Lever's prose, utilizing intricate etchings to heighten the comedic and dramatic tension of the narrative. The collaboration between Lever and Phiz became a cornerstone of nineteenth-century serial publishing, setting a visual standard that defined the reception of Lever's work for generations of readers.
