Roland Cashel -

Roland Cashel was first published in 1849 as a serial novel, a format characteristic of Charles Lever’s literary career during the mid-19th century. Lever was a prolific Irish novelist known for his vivid depictions of military life and Irish society, and this work emerged during a period when he was transitioning from his early picaresque tales toward more complex, multi-layered narratives. The novel follows the titular protagonist through a series of global adventures, reflecting the Victorian era’s fascination with international travel and the accumulation of wealth.

The physical edition with the ISBN 9781512042559 is a modern reprint of the original text, produced to keep Lever’s extensive bibliography accessible to contemporary readers and scholars of 19th-century literature. The design of such reprints typically emphasizes legibility and the preservation of the original prose rather than the aesthetic flourishes of the period’s initial illustrated installments, which often featured engravings by artists like Phiz. These reprints serve as a functional gateway to the sprawling, sometimes chaotic storytelling style that defined Lever's output.
