The Novels of Charles Lever: Roland Cashel ; 2

Roland Cashel was originally published in serial form between 1849 and 1850 before being gathered into volumes. Charles James Lever, an Irish novelist known for his picaresque tales of military and social life, wrote this work during a period of transition in his style, moving away from the boisterous, comedic sketches that defined his early career toward a more structured narrative form. The novel reflects the mid-Victorian fascination with global travel and the complex inheritance plots that were staples of the genre at the time.

The illustrations, which remain a defining feature of the original editions, were provided by Phiz, the pseudonym of Hablot Knight Browne. Browne was a prolific collaborator of the era, most notably associated with the works of Charles Dickens. His etched plates for Lever's novels were instrumental in shaping the visual identity of the stories, providing a satirical and often dramatic counterpoint to Lever’s prose that resonated with contemporary readers seeking both entertainment and moral observation.
