Saint Seiya: Tenkai-Hen Josō - Overture was conceived as the cinematic bridge between the conclusion of the Hades arc and the intended final chapter of Masami Kurumada’s long-running Saint Seiya saga. Released in 2004, the film was designed to explore the aftermath of the battle against Hades, focusing on the psychological toll taken on Seiya and the subsequent intervention of the Olympian deities. It represented an ambitious attempt by Toei Animation to elevate the franchise's visual storytelling, leaning into a more melancholic and ethereal aesthetic than the traditional television series.

The film was directed by Shigeyasu Yamauchi, who sought to depart from the standard shonen action template by emphasizing abstract imagery and character introspection. While the visual direction and atmospheric score were praised for their artistic merit, the narrative departures sparked significant controversy among the core fanbase.
