Sammtliche Werke: vollstandige Ausgabe in zehn Banden

This ten-volume set of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's 'Sämtliche Werke' represents a foundational effort in the 19th-century German publishing tradition to consolidate the author's expansive literary output into a standardized, accessible format. Produced to serve the growing reading public of the era, these editions were intended to preserve the integrity of Goethe's poetry, plays, and prose in a coherent, scholarly collection that reflected the Enlightenment values he championed.

The aesthetic design of these mid-19th-century editions often utilized traditional bookbinding techniques, such as gilt-lettered spines and durable leather or cloth covers, reflecting the bourgeois appreciation for library-quality volumes. By organizing his vast body of work into ten curated volumes, publishers sought to define the canon of German literature, establishing Goethe not merely as an author but as a cultural monument whose influence on European romanticism and humanism required a definitive, unified print architecture.
