Where it came from
Sarutobi Ecchan was created by the prolific manga artist Ishinomori Shoutarou and serialized in Weekly Margaret starting in 1969. The series follows a young girl named Ecchan who possesses supernatural ninja abilities, blending elements of slice-of-life comedy with mild fantasy. Ishinomori, a cornerstone of the post-war manga industry, designed the title character with his signature expressive style, aiming to create a relatable yet extraordinary protagonist who navigated school life while hiding her powers from her peers.
Following the success of the manga, the title was adapted into an animated television series in 1971 produced by Toei Animation. The work is widely regarded as a significant example of Ishinomori's versatility beyond his more famous superhero franchises like Kamen Rider. While it remains a cult classic rather than a global phenomenon, the collection is valued by manga historians for its role in the evolution of the mahou shoujo and supernatural comedy genres during the late Showa era.
