Save State

Save State is a digital-first graphic novel series written and illustrated by Alex Liego, emerging from the vibrant independent webcomic scene of the late 2010s. The work was conceived as a narrative exploration of gaming culture, blending slice-of-life elements with the technical aesthetics of retro console interfaces. Liego utilized the medium to comment on the intersection of human relationships and virtual progression, drawing heavily on a minimalist color palette and character designs that prioritize expressive, fluid movement.

The series gained traction within online artistic communities for its deliberate pacing and its sensitive portrayal of burnout and personal growth. Critics and readers noted that Liego’s design language creates a distinct sense of atmosphere, often mirroring the quiet, rhythmic loops found in atmospheric adventure games. While primarily distributed through digital platforms, the collection represents a significant contribution to the modern canon of creator-owned digital comics, reflecting a shift toward serialized long-form storytelling in online spaces.
