Select Essays of Dr. Johnson

Select Essays of Dr. Johnson is a curation of the critical and moral writings of Samuel Johnson, the preeminent eighteenth-century English man of letters. These collections were historically compiled to condense Johnson’s prolific contributions to journals like The Rambler, The Idler, and The Adventurer into a portable format for the Victorian and Edwardian reading public. By isolating his most poignant observations on life, literature, and human nature, publishers aimed to preserve the relevance of his distinctively formal and didactic prose for a generation that increasingly favored shorter, essayistic reading material.

The physical production of these volumes often reflects the conservative aesthetic of early twentieth-century academic publishing, characterized by sturdy cloth bindings and clear, traditional typography intended to mirror the gravity of Johnson’s intellectual voice. While editions vary, they were generally received as essential pedagogical tools, serving as a gateway for students and scholars to engage with Johnson’s command of the English language and his unflinching moral introspection. As a staple in university libraries and private study collections, the work has remained a foundational text in the history of English literary criticism.
