Selections from James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson

James Boswell’s Life of Samuel Johnson, first published in 1791, is widely considered the greatest biography in the English language. It emerged from Boswell’s decades of meticulous note-taking and close observation of Dr. Johnson, the preeminent man of letters of his time. The work revolutionized biographical writing by moving away from hagiography toward a candid, deeply human portrait that captured Johnson’s distinctive voice, intellectual rigor, and idiosyncratic habits.

The numerous abridged editions and selections published over the following centuries were designed to make this monumental text accessible to a broader, less specialized readership. These volumes typically distilled the essential conversations and anecdotes that defined the relationship between Boswell and Johnson, aiming to preserve the wit and philosophical insights of the original while omitting the denser documentation. These selections have long been valued for their ability to introduce modern readers to the intellectual vibrancy of the eighteenth-century literary circle.
