Selections From James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson, Chosen and Edited by R.W. Chapman

This edition is rooted in the meticulous scholarship of R.W. Chapman, a noted authority on 18th-century English literature and a long-time secretary to the Delegates of the Oxford University Press. Chapman was widely respected for his definitive editions of Jane Austen and Samuel Johnson, and in this volume, he sought to distill Boswell's monumental biography into a more accessible format while maintaining the rigorous academic standards associated with his editorial work.

The publication reflects the long-standing tradition of academic abridgment intended to bring the character and wit of Samuel Johnson to a wider readership. By curating the most significant exchanges and observations recorded by Boswell, the edition serves as a portable window into the intellectual life of the London literary circle of the late 1700s. It remains valued by readers who appreciate Chapman's balanced approach to preserving the voice of the original text while providing the necessary clarity for a modern audience.
