Where it came from
Setagaya Ichi Furui Youkan no Yanushi ni Naru, translated as Becoming the Owner of the Oldest Western-Style House in Setagaya, is a personal essay manga by acclaimed creator Yamashita Kazumi. Serialized in the magazine Cocohana, the work chronicles the author's real-life endeavor to purchase, renovate, and maintain a historic, aging residence in Tokyo. It emerged from Yamashita's desire to document the physical and psychological toll of architectural preservation while reflecting on the intersection of domestic life and historical continuity.
The series is noted for its characteristic blend of self-deprecating humor and sharp observational detail, typical of Yamashita's long-standing career. Unlike her more fantastical works, this collection focuses on the mundane frustrations of property management, such as dealing with structural decay and navigating the complexities of historical renovation. It was received as a candid, insightful look into the realities of homeownership in Japan, appealing to readers interested in lifestyle memoirs and the preservation of urban heritage.
