Shibou to Iu Na no Fuku o Kite

Shibou to Iu Na no Fuku o Kite, or 'Dressed in the Name of Fat', was serialized in the manga magazine Feel Young during the late 1990s. Created by Moyoco Anno, the work emerged as a visceral exploration of the societal pressures placed on young women in Japan regarding body image and self-worth. It depicts the harrowing psychological toll of disordered eating and the relentless pursuit of an impossible physical ideal, marking a departure from more conventional shoujo tropes of the era.

The visual style utilizes Anno's signature sharp, emotive linework to mirror the protagonist's fragile mental state and the cruel, isolating nature of her environment. Upon its publication, the manga was recognized for its uncompromising and often uncomfortable honesty, challenging readers to confront the toxicity of superficial cultural expectations. It remains a significant piece of contemporary manga, frequently cited for its unflinching portrayal of an internal struggle that was rarely addressed with such depth at the time of its release.
