Jelly In The Merry-Go-Round

Jelly in the Merry-Go-Round was authored by Moyoco Anno and first serialized in the late 1990s. The work emerged during a period of prolific output for the mangaka, capturing the stylistic transition of shoujo manga as it began to incorporate more cynical, fashion-forward, and introspective themes typical of late-90s Japanese pop culture. It stands as an early testament to Anno's ability to blend whimsical aesthetics with the complex emotional landscape of young adulthood.

The narrative follows a protagonist navigating the surreal and often turbulent experiences of growing up, framed within the dreamlike imagery of a carousel. Anno's distinct artistic style, characterized by clean lines and an emphasis on character fashion, was instrumental in establishing her reputation as a chronicler of urban life. The volume is regarded by scholars of the medium as a foundational piece in the development of her later, more mature works, reflecting the anxieties and aspirations of the era's youth.
