Where it came from
Shin Kamen Rider SPIRITS serves as a modern reimagining of the original 1971 Kamen Rider series, conceptualized to honor the legacy of creator Shotaro Ishinomori. The narrative reinterprets the foundational lore of the franchise by bridging the gap between the various Showa-era riders, grounding the fantastical heroics in a more visceral and emotionally resonant tone. This specific arc focuses on the isolated struggle of Takeshi Hongo, the original Kamen Rider, as he navigates the psychological and physical tolls of his transformation.
The series is written and illustrated by Kenichi Muraeda, who was mentored by Ishinomori. Muraeda sought to capture the kinetic intensity of the original manga while updating the visual storytelling to appeal to long-time fans who grew up with the source material. Upon its release, the work was well-received by the manga community for its technical mastery, detailed character designs, and its ability to modernize a classic hero without sacrificing the gritty, melancholic essence that defined the character’s early origins.
