Where it came from
Simon Sues was published in the early 2000s by TokyoPop as part of their effort to bridge the gap between traditional Japanese manga and Western-influenced manhwa. Created by Myung Hee Kim, the series follows the titular character, a young woman navigating the complexities of romance, friendship, and professional life in a vibrant, urban setting. The work represents a period in the publishing industry where international styles were synthesized to appeal to a global teen and young adult demographic.
The aesthetic of the series is characterized by expressive, shojo-inspired character designs and a focus on fashion-forward costuming, which was a hallmark of Kim's approach to visual storytelling. By emphasizing the interior lives of the characters, Kim aimed to provide a relatable, contemporary narrative that resonated with readers seeking lighthearted yet earnest explorations of early adulthood. The series remains a notable example of the early 2000s trend toward globalized comic influences.
