Where it came from
Simple Thinking About Blood Type began as an immensely popular webcomic series created by South Korean artist Park Dongsun. Debuting on the web portal Naver in 2009, the series utilized a minimalist, chibi-inspired art style to humorously explore the cultural phenomenon of the Ketsueki-gata, or blood type personality theory, which posits that a person’s blood type influences their character traits and compatibility.
The transition of the webcomic into printed volumes followed its massive success across East Asia, where the pseudoscientific theory maintains a significant foothold in social life. Park Dongsun’s design choices—focusing on exaggerated archetypes for each blood type—aimed to make complex social interactions relatable and lighthearted for a wide audience. The volumes were well-received as accessible entertainment that captured the playful tropes associated with blood type astrology, bridging the gap between digital content and physical media.
