Where it came from
SLASH is a self-published independent manga volume created by Edward Echavez, emerging from the vibrant landscape of early 21st-century grassroots comics. The work reflects the author's interest in blending traditional shonen action tropes with a distinct, personal aesthetic, serving as an example of the DIY creative spirit that flourished within the creator-owned publishing scene of that era.
The design of the volume centers on high-contrast visual storytelling, characterized by dynamic panel layouts and character archetypes intended to evoke a sense of kinetic energy. While the project remained an underground release, it stands as a documentation of Echavez's individual artistic process and his attempt to contribute a self-contained narrative to the independent manga market, garnering a niche appreciation among enthusiasts of small-press serials.
