Where it came from
The Slam Dunk Shinsoban, or 'reorganized edition,' was released by Shueisha beginning in 2018 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Takehiko Inoue's seminal basketball manga. This release reformatted the original 31-volume series into 20 volumes, utilizing new cover art illustrated specifically for the collection by Inoue. The design focused on a clean, minimalist aesthetic that highlights the dynamic character portraits against stark backgrounds, contrasting with the action-heavy original serialization.
The series remains a cornerstone of the sports manga genre, credited with sparking a massive surge in the popularity of basketball across Japan and East Asia during the 1990s. By re-releasing the series in this prestige format, Inoue intended to present the narrative with refined visual consistency and updated production values, allowing both long-time fans and new readers to experience the Shohoku High School basketball team's journey through a polished, definitive lens.
