Where it came from
Slaughter! Heartful Company is a collection of essays and illustrations authored by Pierre Taki, a prominent Japanese musician and actor known for his work with the electronic group Denki Groove. Published in the 1990s, the book reflects the eclectic and often irreverent cultural landscape of the era, capturing Taki’s unique perspective as a multifaceted performer who oscillated between mainstream television success and the avant-garde music scene.
The volume serves as a representative artifact of the mid-90s Japanese subculture scene, characterized by a playful, surreal, and occasionally abrasive aesthetic. Taki’s approach to the design and content was intended to mirror his persona at the time, utilizing a mix of candid prose and provocative visual art to engage with his readership. It was received as a niche literary extension of his public image, appealing primarily to fans of his music and his distinct brand of deadpan humor.
