Where it came from
Space Guard was created by the prolific manga artist Mitsuteru Yokoyama, a foundational figure in the history of Japanese science fiction manga. Produced during the mid-20th century, the series emerged during a period of intense post-war fascination with space travel and futurism, reflecting a cultural optimism regarding technological advancement. Yokoyama, known for his ability to blend action-oriented narratives with relatable character dynamics, crafted this work to explore the defense of humanity amidst the vast, often unpredictable reaches of outer space.
The design and artistic direction of the series mirror the clean, graphic lines characteristic of Yokoyama's style during this era. His approach prioritized visual clarity and kinetic storytelling, ensuring that the complex machinery and alien environments were accessible to young readers. While Space Guard is frequently overshadowed by his later, more expansive epics like Tetsujin 28-go, the series remains a significant example of the aesthetic sensibilities that defined early golden-age manga, capturing the spirit of exploration and adventure that influenced generations of subsequent sci-fi creators.
