Where it came from
Star Trek: Lore War, written by Christopher Cantwell and released in 2024, is a graphic novel installment within the IDW Publishing Star Trek canon. The narrative was commissioned as part of the publisher's efforts to expand the Star Trek comic universe, specifically focusing on the character of Lore and his complex relationship with his brother, Data. Cantwell was tasked with exploring the psychological dissonance between the two androids, situating the story within the broader timeline of the franchise to bridge gaps between existing televised lore.
The visual direction of the volume aimed to capture the stark, clinical aesthetic of the Star Trek: The Next Generation era while incorporating dynamic, modern comic book panelling. Christopher Cantwell approached the design and characterization with an emphasis on the duality of the brothers, seeking to portray Lore not merely as a villain, but as a byproduct of his unique technical development. The reception has been largely positive among the fanbase, who noted the author's fidelity to the source material's established character traits and the atmospheric tension captured in the artwork.
