Where it came from
The Starting Gate! series serves as a multimedia companion to the Uma Musume Pretty Derby franchise, which reimagines historical racehorses as anthropomorphic girls. This volume, featuring work by S. Kosugi, was developed as part of a broader push by Cygames to expand the narrative depth of the franchise beyond mobile gaming and animation, providing a dedicated manga space for character-driven stories and slice-of-life interactions within the Tracen Academy setting.
The design and artistic direction prioritize a blend of shonen-inspired energy and character design consistency across the expanding Uma Musume universe. S. Kosugi was tasked with translating the high-octane racing aesthetics of the game into a static, sequential format that emphasizes the interpersonal bonds between the characters. The series has been generally well-received by fans for successfully capturing the playful yet competitive spirit that defines the core IP.
