Where it came from
Tale of the Floating Sages is a work by the South Korean manhwa artist Nangsun, emerging from a contemporary landscape of digital-first storytelling. The series is grounded in a blend of fantasy and philosophical inquiry, typical of the author's focus on atmosphere and character-driven narratives. It serves as a testament to the evolving medium of Korean web-based comics, which prioritize fluid pacing and expressive, painterly aesthetics over traditional panel-heavy structures.
The design of the series centers on a delicate, ethereal visual language intended to mirror the titular themes of transience and sage-like wisdom. Nangsun’s approach to illustration is characterized by a muted color palette and soft, intentional line work that emphasizes the isolation and interiority of the protagonists. Upon its release, the work was noted for its departure from high-octane action tropes, finding favor among readers who appreciate contemplative, slower-paced storytelling within the fantasy genre.
