The American Aberdeen-Angus Herd-Book: Containing a Record of Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Approved and Admitted for Registry Under the By-Laws of the American Aberdeen-Angus Breeders' Association, Volume 18

The American Aberdeen-Angus Herd-Book was established as the formal, authoritative record for the breed in the United States, providing a standardized system for pedigree tracking essential to the developing American cattle industry. Volume 18 represents a snapshot of the association's efforts at the turn of the 20th century to curate and certify the lineage of the Aberdeen-Angus, a breed prized for its hardiness and meat quality, which had gained significant popularity among American ranchers following its introduction from Scotland.

The publication was compiled and managed by the American Aberdeen-Angus Breeders' Association, an organization formed to regulate breeding standards and protect the integrity of the bloodlines. These volumes were designed as utilitarian, archival documents rather than aesthetic works, serving as vital ledger books for breeders. While technically dry, their reception among agriculturalists was significant, as they provided the legal and genealogical proof required to trade animals within the elite network of professional cattlemen.
