Where it came from
The Brief Return of Dr. Slump was released in the mid-1990s as a nostalgic revival of Akira Toriyama's original 1980 hit, Dr. Slump. Following the conclusion of his long-running Dragon Ball series, Toriyama returned to his roots with this short-form project to revisit the chaotic, comedic life of Arale Norimaki and the inhabitants of Penguin Village. The work serves as a stylistic bridge between his earlier gag-manga roots and the more polished, kinetic character designs he perfected during his tenure at Weekly Shonen Jump.
Designed in Toriyama’s signature rounded, expressive style, the illustrations favor whimsical sight gags and exaggerated physical comedy over the high-stakes narrative tension found in his later action manga. The brief revival was well-received by fans who grew up with the original series, offering a playful subversion of traditional superhero tropes. Critics often note this period as a demonstration of Toriyama’s enduring talent for character-driven humor and his ability to balance simple, clean line work with dense, imaginative backgrounds.
