The British Classical Authors. Select Specimens of the National Literature of England and America. 65. Ed

The British Classical Authors was compiled by the German educator Ludwig Herrig and first published in the mid-19th century. Intended as a comprehensive pedagogical tool, the anthology was designed to introduce students of English across German-speaking territories to a wide array of canonical literary works, ranging from Shakespearean drama to contemporary Victorian essays and American prose. Its publication reflected the growing academic focus on English language acquisition in Europe and the widespread desire to institutionalize the study of English literature as a foundational aspect of liberal education.

The volume is characterized by its structured, encyclopedic format, which balances technical grammatical notes with extensive excerpts from esteemed authors. Herrig’s editorial approach was heavily influenced by the philological standards of the time, emphasizing stylistic analysis and cultural literacy. Upon its release, the collection was met with significant approval by academic circles, serving as a standard textbook for decades and undergoing numerous editions to accommodate shifting literary tastes and evolving pedagogical requirements.
