The forty-five guardsmen. The conspirators. The regent's daughter

These works represent late-period historical novels by Alexandre Dumas, written during the mid-19th century as part of his extensive output of serialized adventure literature. The Forty-Five Guardsmen serves as the conclusion to the Valois cycle, while The Conspirators and The Regent’s Daughter belong to the Regency cycle, illustrating Dumas's penchant for weaving fictional narratives into the political intrigues of French history.

The design and tone of these novels are characteristic of the 'roman-feuilleton' style, which prioritized breakneck pacing and dramatic historical reinterpretations to maintain the interest of serial newspaper readers. Dumas collaborated with various assistants, most notably Auguste Maquet, to flesh out these intricate plots. Upon their release, they were highly popular with the public for their swashbuckling energy, though they often faced criticism from contemporary literary critics who dismissed them as sensationalist commercial products rather than serious historical scholarship.
