The Hidden Record; Or, The Old Sea Mystery: A Novel

The Hidden Record; Or, The Old Sea Mystery, authored by Elijah Whittier Blaisdell, is a work of late nineteenth-century American fiction. It emerged during a period when the adventure novel and the nautical mystery were staple genres for popular reading audiences, reflecting a fascination with maritime lore and the suspenseful storytelling conventions of the era. The novel is representative of the serialized style of prose that characterized many independent publications of its time, designed to engage readers through complex plot twists and atmospheric settings.

Blaisdell’s writing in this volume reflects the stylistic sensibilities of his contemporary peers, prioritizing episodic tension and thematic elements common to the sea-faring adventures of the late 1800s. While Blaisdell remains a niche figure in literary history, his work serves as an artifact of the publishing culture in Minnesota and the broader Midwest, where regional authors contributed to the expanding market for affordable, accessible fiction. The book is preserved today primarily through library archives, serving as a point of interest for researchers studying the reach and distribution of late-century popular literature.
