The Hidden Record: Or, The Old Sea Mystery. A Novel

Published in the late 19th century, The Hidden Record: Or, The Old Sea Mystery represents a characteristic example of the nautical melodramas that proliferated in the American literary market during the post-Civil War era. These serialized adventures were often designed for a growing middle-class readership captivated by tales of maritime peril, lost treasure, and moral intrigue, providing affordable escapism that bridged the gap between high-brow literature and sensationalist penny dreadfuls.

Elijah Whittier Blaisdell, the author, operated within the competitive landscape of turn-of-the-century popular fiction. His work reflects the period’s prevailing fascination with hidden histories and oceanic secrets, utilizing a narrative style intended to be both accessible and gripping. While Blaisdell remains a niche figure in historical bibliography, his output is significant for its inclusion in the specialized collections of institutions like the New York Public Library, which preserve these artifacts of domestic entertainment as windows into the reading habits and cultural anxieties of the American public during that period.
