The Novels of Charles Lever: Roland Cashel; with illus. by Phiz

Roland Cashel was first serialized between 1848 and 1849 before being published as a complete volume, reflecting the popular Victorian mode of installment-based fiction. Charles Lever, a prolific Irish novelist of the period, crafted this picaresque tale during a time of significant transition in his career, following his initial success with military-themed novels. The work is noted for its sprawling narrative structure and complex social observations, characteristic of the mid-nineteenth-century serial format intended for a wide reading public.

The volume is distinguished by the contributions of Hablot Knight Browne, widely known by his nom de plume, Phiz. As the primary illustrator for many of Lever’s works, Browne employed his signature etched plates to capture the dramatic and often satirical essence of Lever’s characters. His partnership with the author helped define the visual aesthetic of the Irish literary canon in the Victorian era, with his illustrations receiving praise for their ability to add depth and narrative nuance to the serialized chapters.
