Where it came from
The Origin Story of the Chikuwaga Hills High School Exorcism Club was created by mangaka Oku Takuo as a foundational volume exploring the supernatural leanings of a suburban Japanese high school. Published during a period when school-life horror subgenres were seeing a surge in popularity, the work was designed to ground ethereal, ghostly phenomena within the relatable, often mundane pressures of extracurricular activities and academic life.
Takuo utilized a minimalist art style that contrasts sharp, unsettling character designs for the apparitions with the softer, more familiar aesthetic of the student body. Upon its release, the volume was noted by critics for its unique tonal shifts between comedic club politics and genuine suspense, helping to establish the series as a cult favorite among readers who appreciate character-driven folklore.
