Where it came from
Ludovico Ariosto first published Orlando Furioso in 1516, crafting it as a continuation of Matteo Maria Boiardo's Orlando Innamorato. Written during the Italian Renaissance at the court of Ferrara, the epic poem was designed to entertain the Este family while reflecting the political instabilities and chivalric ideals of the period. Its intricate, interwoven plot lines and masterful use of irony were intended to elevate the romance genre to a level of literary complexity previously unseen.
The poem is widely regarded as one of the most influential works in European literature, praised for its innovative structure and humanist perspective. Over the centuries, its narrative of madness, love, and heroism has been translated and adapted countless times, shaping the development of the epic form. Modern editions, such as the one referenced, serve as critical conduits for keeping Ariosto’s sprawling, fantastical exploration of human folly accessible to contemporary readers.
