The Poetical Works of Thomas Hood: With Some Account of the Author. in Four Volumes. Volume III

Published in the mid-19th century, this collection serves as a definitive retrospective of the works of Thomas Hood, a British poet and humorist celebrated for his ability to balance social commentary with lighthearted wit. The four-volume set was compiled posthumously to preserve Hood's legacy, offering readers a comprehensive look at his diverse literary contributions, ranging from serious poems like The Song of the Shirt to his lighter comic verse. The project was intended to formalize his status in the Victorian literary canon, ensuring that his distinct voice remained accessible to the public long after his passing in 1845.

The design of this specific volume reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of Victorian-era book production, often featuring cloth-bound covers and traditional typography characteristic of the period's scholarly editions. These volumes were aimed at the literate middle class, serving as both a decorative addition to a gentleman's library and a resource for academic study. While individual volumes from this set are occasionally found in isolation, the collection as a whole was received with appreciation by contemporary critics who valued Hood’s humanitarian themes and his technical mastery of the English language.
