The Poetical Works of Thomas Hood: With Some Account of the Author

This volume represents a late nineteenth-century attempt to synthesize the legacy of Thomas Hood, a Victorian poet and humorist known for his poignant social commentary and sharp wit. Following his death in 1845, various editions of his collected works were compiled to preserve his contributions to English literature, often bridging the gap between his popular lighthearted puns and his more somber, socially conscious pieces like 'The Song of the Shirt'. These collections were intended to offer a definitive look at his creative trajectory, providing readers with both his verses and a biographical account of his struggles and career.

The editorial style of these editions typically adhered to the Victorian tradition of the 'authorized' biography, aiming to provide a respectful, comprehensive view of the author's life. Designers of these editions often focused on clean, academic typography and durable bindings suited for a library shelf. While specific design credits for this iteration are part of a broader legacy of archival publishing, the work was received as a standard reference for students and scholars seeking a unified source for Hood's diverse poetic output.
