The Poetical Works of Thomas Hood: With a Memoir of the Author

The Poetical Works of Thomas Hood, accompanied by a memoir, serves as a significant archival compilation of the nineteenth-century English poet and humorist. First appearing in various mid-Victorian editions following his death in 1845, the collection was assembled to preserve his legacy, bridging the gap between his popular lighthearted social satire and his more somber, empathetic explorations of poverty and human suffering.

This specific volume, often released as part of legacy publishing series, focuses on the structural elegance characteristic of nineteenth-century book design. The inclusion of an introductory memoir was a standard editorial practice of the era, intended to provide readers with the context of Hood’s life as a struggling writer, thereby framing his work for a mid-century audience that increasingly sought to contextualize literary output through the lens of biography.
