Where it came from
The Rising Sun from the Ocean, known in Japan as Umi no Sakigake, is a manga series created by the mangaka Tsunomaru. It was serialized in the late 1990s, emerging during a period when Tsunomaru was gaining significant traction in the industry, most notably for his work on the gag manga Midori no Makibao. This series represents the author's attempt to explore different narrative tones beyond the slapstick humor of his earlier hits.
The design and artistic direction reflect Tsunomaru’s signature aesthetic, characterized by exaggerated character features and dynamic, high-energy compositions. While it did not reach the same widespread cultural ubiquity as his more famous works, it remains a notable entry in his bibliography, serving as a testament to his versatility as a storyteller within the competitive landscape of Weekly Shonen Jump during that era.
