The Works of Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield, Embracing Novels, Romances, Plays, Poems, Biography, Short Stories and Great Speeches: Lothair

Lothair was originally published in 1870, marking Benjamin Disraeli’s return to fiction after a lengthy hiatus spent leading the Conservative Party and serving as a pivotal figure in British politics. Written during his time out of office, the novel reflects Disraeli's preoccupation with the socio-political tensions of the Victorian era, particularly the influence of the Roman Catholic Church and the evolving nature of the British aristocracy. It was designed as a sophisticated satire on high society, blending elements of the 'silver-fork' novel with deep political commentary.

The broader collection, The Works of Benjamin Disraeli, serves as a comprehensive anthology of his literary and oratorical contributions. The edition represented by this ISBN is a modern reproduction intended to preserve Disraeli’s complete body of work, encompassing his diverse range of novels, plays, poems, and biographical sketches. While these collected sets are primarily used for archival and academic reference, they reflect the enduring cultural interest in Disraeli as a unique figure who successfully straddled the worlds of Victorian literature and imperial statecraft.
