Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye: A Novel

The Bluest Eye, published in 1970, marked the debut of Toni Morrison as a novelist. Emerging from the Black Arts Movement, the book was conceived as an exploration of the psychological toll of white beauty standards on young Black girls in 1940s Ohio. Morrison began writing the story while teaching at Howard University and raising her children, aiming to center the interior lives of marginalized figures who were often relegated to the background of American literature.
