Where it came from
Published in 1897 in the Mathematische Annalen, Ludwig Stickelberger's paper 'Ueber eine Verallgemeinerung der Kreisteilung' stands as a foundational contribution to algebraic number theory. It was written during a period of intense mathematical rigor in Germany, aimed at extending the classical theory of cyclotomic fields to broader structures, specifically focusing on the prime ideal decomposition within these fields.
The work is primarily remembered for introducing the Stickelberger element and the corresponding Stickelberger ideal. Designed to clarify the class group structure of cyclotomic fields, the paper was initially met with cautious academic interest before being recognized as a cornerstone of modern Iwasawa theory. It remains a essential reference for mathematicians studying the Galois module structure of class groups.
