Ultraman G

Ultraman G, also known as Ultraman Great, emerged from a 1990 international co-production between Tsuburaya Productions and the Australian production company South Australian Film Corporation. The series was designed to introduce the long-running Japanese tokusatsu franchise to an English-speaking audience, filming on location in Australia with a unique ecological theme centered on the threat of environmental collapse, which distinguished it from the more urban-focused Japanese entries.

The accompanying manga adaptation by Kazuhiko Shimamoto reflects his signature high-energy, dynamic artistic style, characterized by exaggerated expressions and intense action sequences. Shimamoto, a noted fan of the genre, adapted the narrative to capture the core spirit of the international series while infusing it with his own distinct brand of dramatic kineticism. While the live-action series faced a mixed reception due to its departure from traditional Japanese production aesthetics, the manga remains a curious artifact of the attempt to bridge global sensibilities with classic kaiju storytelling.
