UNderGRound

UNderGRound is a collection of short stories by the Japanese artist and illustrator Maruo Suehiro, a central figure in the ero-guro nansensu movement. First published in the late 1980s, the work emerged from a cultural period characterized by a fascination with the grotesque, the surreal, and the taboo. The collection serves as an exploration of the darker peripheries of human desire and societal decay, reflecting Maruo's signature aesthetic which blends pre-war Japanese woodblock printing styles with contemporary transgressive themes.

Maruo’s approach to the collection was heavily influenced by his background as an illustrator for underground manga magazines and posters. His meticulous, stark ink work seeks to provoke visceral reactions, often juxtaposing beauty with extreme morbidity. Upon its release, the work solidified Maruo's reputation as a provocative auteur; it was received as a challenging piece of avant-garde art that pushed the boundaries of permissible content, effectively cementing his legacy within the niche but influential Japanese underground literary scene.
