Unlucky Young Men

Unlucky Young Men was authored by Eiji Otsuka and illustrated by Sansuke Yamada, first serialized in the magazine Comic Beam beginning in 2008. The work serves as a dense, historical meta-fiction that reimagines the radical political climate of 1960s and 1970s Japan. It weaves together the paths of various historical figures, including the writer Yukio Mishima and the manga artist Kazuhiko Kato, amidst the backdrop of the student protest movements and the evolving counterculture of the era.

The narrative design reflects Otsuka’s background as a critic and cultural theorist, intentionally blending journalistic research with the heightened visual language of seinen manga.
