Vitreous Flower & Destroy the World

Vitreous Flower & Destroy the World originated as the grand prize-winning story for the 'Anime Adaptation Project' competition hosted by Pony Canyon in 2013. The original submission, titled D.backup, was created by the doujin writer known as Ochau, who envisioned a post-apocalyptic narrative centered on the fragility of digital memory and the existential persistence of sentient programs. The concept was eventually adapted into a 2016 feature film by A-1 Pictures, titled Vitreous Flower & Destroy the World, which expanded the short story into a high-concept science fiction exploration of loss and renewal.

The character designs and the aesthetic direction of the project were heavily influenced by the work of the illustrator Kantoku, whose distinct, luminous style defined the look of the film's protagonists, Remi and Dorothy. The design process focused on contrast, blending cold, inorganic landscapes with delicate, floral imagery to emphasize the central theme of preservation. Upon its release, the film was noted for its introspective pace and visual ambition, earning a dedicated following among fans of philosophical science fiction who appreciated its departure from traditional action-heavy tropes.
