VIVA! CALCIO

Viva! Calcio was serialized during the late 1980s and early 1990s, a period when Japanese interest in professional soccer was surging ahead of the official launch of the J.League. Aihara Tsukasa authored this series to capture the burgeoning enthusiasm for the sport, framing the narrative around the competitive and cultural nuances of professional soccer leagues. The work served as a reflection of the era's transition from viewing soccer as a niche activity to embracing it as a major national pastime.

The design and artistic approach of the volume reflect the distinct stylistic trends of sports manga from that era, characterized by dynamic action panels and a focus on player psychology. Aihara sought to balance the technical aspects of football matches with the personal growth of the characters, a formula that resonated with a readership eager for stories that mirrored the professionalization of the sport in Japan. While it remains a niche title today, it is recognized by aficionados for its role in documenting the period's soccer mania.
