Wandelingen door Nederland met pen en potlood

Wandelingen door Nederland met pen en potlood was produced in the late 19th century, serving as a comprehensive multi-volume topographical survey of the Netherlands. Jacobus Craandijk, a Dutch clergyman and writer, authored the series with the intent of documenting the country’s evolving landscape, local traditions, and historical architecture before the rapid industrialization of the era could permanently alter them. The work was published in installments between 1875 and 1888, reflecting the growing 19th-century interest in domestic tourism and cultural heritage.

The distinctive visual identity of the series was achieved through collaboration with the artist Pieter Adrianus Schipperus, whose detailed illustrations capture the pastoral and urban character of the Dutch provinces. By pairing Craandijk's observational prose with Schipperus’s sketches, the collection functioned as both a travelogue and a preservationist project. It was well-received by contemporary readers and scholars for its methodical approach, becoming a foundational resource for Dutch regional history and remains a significant artifact of the Dutch Golden Age of travel literature.
