Wandelingen door Nederland met pen en potlood: Zeeland, Noord-Brabant

Wandelingen door Nederland met pen en potlood, or Walks through the Netherlands with pen and pencil, was an ambitious multi-volume travelogue series published in the late 19th century. Written by the theologian and writer Jacobus Craandijk, the project aimed to document the changing Dutch landscape through descriptive prose and detailed illustrations, serving as a cultural survey during a period of rapid industrialization. The series is celebrated for its ability to capture the unique architectural and folkloric characteristics of different provinces, providing an invaluable record of regional identity before the modernization of the early 20th century.

The visual identity of this volume was shaped by the collaboration between Craandijk and the illustrator Philip Zilcken, whose drawings emphasize the distinct scenery of Zeeland and Noord-Brabant. The work was intended to appeal to both the educated armchair traveler and those seeking a deeper understanding of their national heritage. Upon release, the series was received with appreciation for its literary quality and meticulous documentation, and it remains a foundational reference for historical geographers and those interested in the artistic rendering of the Dutch topography.
